Increased patient safety through software-supported tracking of tissue samples from the operating room to pathology using RFID technology

In the project, which is funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg, the University Hospital Tübingen, Department of Women's Health, Karl Storz SE & Co. KG and the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute are jointly developing software-supported tracking of tissue samples from the operating room to pathology using RFID technology.

Description

When a tumor is removed, tissue samples obtained in the operating room must be analyzed promptly while the operation is still in progress to ensure that the tumor tissue has been completely removed. Mixing up or even losing samples would jeopardize patient health, for example by leading to a misdiagnosis. Therefore, as part of the joint project, tissue samples are tagged with RFID technology and reliably tracked as they travel through the clinic. This enables optimal logistics of the samples and reliable, rapid access to analysis data, thus increasing patient safety.
