Probiotic wound dressings for veterinary medicine (ProbioWA)

The aim of the research project is to develop wound dressings that contain probiotic bacteria living in a sterile collagen matrix.

The aim of the research project is to develop wound dressings that contain probiotic bacteria living in a sterile collagen matrix. The probiotic bacteria are encapsulated using the PEM process and incorporated into the matrix of the wound dressing. Freeze-drying makes the wound dressings storable.

One of the biggest problems in the development of wound dressings is the sterilization of the collagen matrix, which is necessary for clinical use. It must be possible to keep the encapsulated probiotic bacteria viable while deactivating contaminating bacteria in the matrix.

The project uses gas plasma sterilization with hydrogen peroxide. If vegetative bacterial cells do not survive in sufficient numbers, the use of spores will be investigated.
