Institute anniversary: The NMI turns 40 - Open Day in September

The NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute was founded on June 18, 1985 with a handful of employees, at that time still in the center of Reutlingen. Today, we are an established and recognized research institute and have been active as a link between basic research and application for exactly 40 years to the day. We are celebrating this milestone birthday with an open day.

The full diversity of NMI research at the open day

What is electrospinning? How can you grow organs on a chip? And how can you measure electrical impulses in a cell? On Friday, September 19, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be very special insights into the diverse research work at the NMI.

During guided tours, researchers will give visitors a glimpse into the laboratories and devices that can perform high-precision 3D printing or look down to the atomic level. They also offer exciting information and insights at information stands and other activities. It will also be possible to touch and participate in many places. Of course, food and drink will also be provided.

NMI should close the gap between academic and industrial research

At the beginning of the 1980s, there was an increasingly threatening gap between academic and industrial research in Germany. It was precisely this gap that the NMI was to close with its application-oriented profile. The impetus for founding the institute came from Dr. Günter Hoff in 1983. After successful persuasion of the Baden-Württemberg state government, the institute was founded on June 18, 1985. Since then, it has developed continuously, both in terms of size and topics. On September 19, the employees will show how exciting, relevant and highly topical their research is today.
