The project is developing a cobalt-free high-voltage battery with sALD-coated electrodes for greater cycle stability, sustainable materials and optimized recycling processes.

The project aims to develop a cobalt-free high-voltage battery with high cycle stability by combining innovative materials and inline surface coating using Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition (sALD). The technology enables scalable coating of electrodes under atmospheric conditions and is to be integrated into existing production facilities. Sustainable high-voltage cathode materials and fluorine-free binders are used to conserve resources and optimize processes. The NMI is responsible for characterizing the ultra-thin layers, while the ZSW is responsible for electrode development and cell assembly. The targeted optimization of sALD technology is aimed at improving battery performance with higher energy densities and simplified recycling processes.
