Innovative measurement method for neuronal 3D cultures

Morphological, molecular and especially functional measurements can be measured in artificially produced 3D neuron cultures. Particularly important is the measurement of the electrical activity of individual neurons with millisecond resolution. The current state of the art is based on customized electrophysiological recording systems, which are characterized by limited throughput and poor integration of further measurement systems. Researchers at the NMI have now developed a new, innovative approach to measure the electrical activity of neuronal networks. They have developed a research approach using microfluidic microelectrode arrays made of glass with multiple wells. In this way, non-invasive electrical recordings of 3D artificial neuron cultures can be generated. In summary, this microphysiological platform enables new avenues for high-throughput studies especially with respect to neurological diseases.
