The aim of the project is to develop a process and equipment technology for the customized molecular surface structuring of catheters that produces a superhydrophilic (water-loving) surface that prevents the deposition of bacteria and blood proteins (as possible starting points for bacterial colonization).
The primary exploitation target is the use of the technology for the production and sale of hemodialysis catheters with an antibacterial, protein-repellent surface. Here alone, additional sales of €1 million p.a. are realistic. In a second step, the use can be extended to other types of central venous catheters. Other medical devices, e.g. made of silicone, could also be considered for use in the future.
