Next generation injectable adaptive hydrogels

Intelligent materials for the treatment of inflammation of the joints

Intelligent materials for the treatment of inflammation of the joints

The project aims to establish a material platform for the local therapy of economically significant ailments such as inflammatory joint diseases. Such inflammations often occur in the course of osteoarthritis, mostly in the knee joints. The frequency of degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system, such as arthrosis, is continuously increasing due to demographic developments in western industrialized countries. In Germany, one in four adults currently suffers from osteoarthritis. In the project, new technologies are being developed that enable the modular production and approval of so-called "hydrogels" with adjustable material properties as a medical device, drug, combination product or carrier material for cell-based regenerative therapies.
