BGF IMPLANT

Accompanying research in the BMBF topic "Intelligent implants".

The BMBF is funding 12 projects with a focus on "intelligent implants" as part of its medical technology action plan. The accompanying research brings together the interests of the network partners. This bundling creates better framework conditions that individual groups or project partners cannot achieve or can only achieve with greater effort.

In the "Functional long-term stability" sub-project, the NMI is in charge of the work packages "Biocompatibility and functionalization of surfaces" and "Functional long-term stability in the biological environment".

Description

The funding measure is part of the IKT 2020 program and includes eight application-oriented joint projects and four projects with a primarily scientific focus. The medical indications and development priorities of the joint projects are different. However, since they are all concerned with the development of intelligent implants, the joint projects face similar, sometimes even common innovation hurdles. The accompanying research brings together the interests of the network partners, promotes the use of synergies, actively transfers knowledge and communicates the project results from the main topic in the healthcare and medical technology sectors. This bundling creates better framework conditions that individual groups or project partners cannot achieve or can only achieve with greater effort.

The main tasks are in:

  • the provision and support of a platform for the pre-competitive solution of common scientific and technical problems and the overcoming of market-specific hurdles,
  • the presentation of the medical and economic importance of implant technology for the healthcare system and the medical technology industry in Germany,
  • the establishment of successful communication with medical users, medical societies, payers and health policy
  • Securing innovation activity by imparting knowledge about current/future standards, approval procedures and reimbursement options in the German healthcare system.

A wiki-based "technology navigator" is being set up as an information pool for joint scientific and technical issues.

In the "Functional long-term stability" sub-project, the NMI is in charge of the work packages "Biocompatibility and functionalization of surfaces" and "Functional long-term stability in the biological environment". The thematic objectives are achieved through moderation and professional support of topics in the four modules of cooperation, knowledge transfer, communication and networking. First of all, the relevant subject areas within the joint projects and their requirements for intelligent implants are classified, the state of the art is worked out and the innovation hurdles are determined. Project meetings are organized and moderated on selected topics. At the end, method schemes and procedures are available in the technology navigator. The partners in the joint projects receive technical support in solving specific problems.
