Transition of established multi-layer lamination/stacking technology from printed circuit board manufacturing to the production of multi-layer, polymer-based microfluidic products

The project adapts an established multi-layer lamination technology from printed circuit board manufacturing to the production of multi-layer hybrid microfluidic products for bio-intelligent applications. The focus is on adhesive-free, energy-efficient low-temperature bonding following UV pretreatment, high-precision alignment/stacking, and the integration of sensors and membranes. Ultimately, proof of concept will be demonstrated through the innervation of human tissue in an organ-on-a-chip system with an integrated microelectrode array for the detection of bioelectrical signals. The commercial potential of both the automated multi-layer fabrication of microfluidic systems to be developed and the bio-intelligent demonstrator is considerable, ranging from manufacturing services - e.g., for point-of-care tests to detect pathogens - to novel approaches to biological “computing” for highly efficient neural networks.
