Field Trip by the Microscopy Research Club to the NanoZ

A few days ago, the Microscopy Research Club at Uhland-Gymnasium in Tübingen took a field trip to see the scanning electron microscope at the Nanoanalytics Center of the NMI in Reutlingen. The goal was to examine the particulate matter samples—which had been collected using a particulate matter collector on the roof of the UG and analyzed in the club using the school’s light microscopes—with the higher resolution of an electron microscope. With the scanning electron microscope, details with structural sizes of just a few nanometers can still be detected, in contrast to the light microscope, which can only reveal details down to the micrometer range.

The students were thrilled that, after a brief introduction and under supervision, they were able to operate the valuable electron microscope completely on their own.

The Microscopy Club operates in collaboration with the South Württemberg Student Research Center in Eningen.
