Combined coating technology to make stainless steel highly resistant to salt water - Development of a corrosion layer

Description:

Worldwide, 6 tons of steel are lost per second due to a lack of corrosion protection and every year an economic loss of approx. 180 billion dollars is caused by corrosion. On the one hand, corrosion can be combated by using very high-quality materials, which, however, cannot always be consolidated with the mechanical material properties and can also be associated with high material costs. An alternative way is to use suitable protective coatings.
In the project, a combined coating technology is to be developed with which medium-quality stainless steel can for the first time be refined to be highly resistant to salt water and comparable electrolytes and suitable for long-term use. At the same time, favourable friction behaviour and high wear resistance can be achieved.
