The aim of the SinusChip project is to develop a stimulation chip for miniaturized visual implants inserted into the retina. The aim is to enable blind people with degenerated retinas to perceive light and dark quickly, stably and accurately. After the coordinator has already demonstrated the basic functionality of such implants to patients, the group now intends to develop a novel chip for wave-shaped stimulation of the optic nerve.
In the joint project SINUSCHIP, the applicants are pursuing the goal of developing a stimulation chip for subretinal retinal implants that enables spatially resolved electrical stimulation of photoreceptor degenerated retinas,
blind retinas with sinusoidal signals (smooth wave stimulation, SWS). With such a CMOS-based microelectronic chip, the temporal quality of the visual perception of blind people with retinal implants should be significantly improved and long-term stimulation should be more gentle.
