The goal of the bioeconomy is to use renewable and biological raw materials to replace fossil-based raw materials. To this end, it utilizes raw materials and byproducts from agriculture and forestry, as well as microorganisms, algae, and cells that can be used, for example, in precision fermentation.

The extensive expertise that the NMI has acquired in the research and application of proteins can also be put to good use in this field. Enzymes, for example—tiny proteins with enormous potency—enable the conversion and upgrading of materials and even waste products. In this field of the future, we are researching and developing technologies that open up entirely new opportunities for us—inspired and supported by nature.
